FAQ's

  • What is an Evergreen Donation:

An Evergreen Donation takes your employee giving (payroll deductions and billing) from last year’s annual campaign and automatically rolls it over to this year’s campaign including gift amount, type of pledge and any designations, unless you specifiy any changes.  Any gifts that were made via cash, check or credit card are not eligible for rollover and would need to be made by you as a new gift. You have the option to make changes to your gifts based on your personal situation at any time.

  • What is an Allocation:

Allocations, or designations, direct your giving to specific funds or charities. You may allocate, or designate, all or part of your gift to United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley, to specific focus areas (Education, Healthy Aging, Community Stability or the Fund for Racial Justice and Equity) and/or to a qualified tax-exempt organization under 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code that supports health or human service initiatives. For details on how to make an allocation or designation, please see the step-by-step pledging guide.

  • Where does my donation go if I don’t live in the Lehigh Valley?

If you are based out of a Lutron office, 100% of your donation will by default go to the United Way of your region. For example, if you’re based out of the Coopersburg office, your entire donation will go to the United Way of the Lehigh Valley. Or, if you are based out of the Boston Engineering office your entire donation will go to the United Way of Massachusetts Bay. If you are a home office employee (e.g. field sales), 100% of your donation will by default go to the United Way of the Lehigh Valley unless you choose a different allocation. You’ll see that the default selection for how you’d like your gift to be allocated is “100% to my local United Way…” when prompted to select your allocations.

  • Can I choose to donate to a charity other than the United Way through this campaign?

Yes, you many allocate some or all of you gift to the charity – or charities – of your choice, with a minimum $25 gift. Any organization you select must have IRS Tax Exempt 501 (c)(3) status, and have health or human services as its primary mission. If a non-qualifying agency is designated, or less than $25 is gifted, United Way will redirect these funds to the LIVE UNITED Fund. When you are prompted to select your allocations, select that you would like your gift to be allocated “to other charities of my choice”.

  • If I choose to allocate my gift to charity of my choice, how much of my donation goes directly to that charity?

86% or more of your donation goes directly to the charity of your choice. The United Way will process all gifts and forward them to eligible agencies as specified by the donor with a 14% charge (not to exceed $250 per donor) to cover supporting costs related to the campaign.

  • To which charity organization does the Lutron match go to?

Lutron will match $0.50 to every $1 you donate. Those matched funds go directly to United Way, regardless of the where you allocate your donation. The matched funds will be tallied at the end of the campaign and distributed to the regional United Ways that Lutron offices are in. The share of where those matched contributions are allocated depends on where employees’ gifts are given, at the discretion of the United Way. For example, if you give $100 to the United Way of the Massachusetts Bay, the entire $100 dollars will go directly to that organization and the $50 match will be allocated across various United Way locations at the end of the campaign. If you give $100 to a charity of your choice, $86 dollars will go directly to that organization, $14 dollars will go to the United Way of the Leigh Valley to cover the cost of the campaign, and the $50 match will be allocated across various United Way locations at the end of the campaign.

  • When a person chooses to point their donation to a different United Way – does 100% of the donation go to that branch, or does the Lehigh Valley retain the 14% processing piece in that scenario?

As long as it is received from UWGLV, the 14% will always come out of their fee group. If a Lutron employee donates out of the area (they live and work in Austin) United Way for Greater Austin fees would come out before going to UWGLV, or another agency – and United Way for Greater Austin may have higher fees than UWGLV.
